Technology and Innovation

We support the development and application of energy-related technology and innovation, preferably in combination with the encouragement and stimulation of young talent.

Frisian Solar Challenge

On 7 February 2006 Nuon signed a one-year agreement with the Sinneboatrace Fryslân Foundation. Nuon thus became the principal sponsor of the first edition of the Frisian Solar Challenge 2006. This is a biannual solar boat race along a route comprising eleven Frisian towns. The event calls attention to the innovative application of renewable energy. In 2006 a total of 24 solar boats from the Netherlands and abroad completed the eleven-town race. On 1 July the boat of TU Delft was the first to pass the finish line. The Nuon innovation prize for the most innovative design went to the Hanze Solar Team from Groningen.

Nuon Solar Team

A new agreement for sponsoring the Nuon Solar Team was signed on 9 November 2006. The team consists of eleven students of TU Delft who are taking part in the World Solar Challenge at the end of October 2007 with their self-designed solar energy vehicle, the Nuna4. The Challenge is a biannual race of over three thousand kilometres across Australia: from Darwin to Adelaide. Nuon sponsors the event to stimulate innovation in the field of renewable energy. It is the fourth time that Nuon is sponsoring the team.

The Nuon Solar Team is working on the construction of an entirely new race concept. Because the new regulations prescribe that the driver must sit upright and that the car must have a normal steering wheel and a rolling cage, the Nuna4 will mark a step towards a vehicle that is more suitable for daily use than the earlier Nunas while still being fast enough to contend for victory.
