In 2006 Nuon’s sponsoring policy was realigned and refocused. Community commitment has become an important condition for all sponsorship activities.

Reading & Writing Foundation
Alongside the Partnership with the KNVB (Dutch Football Association), Nuon became a Corporate Partner of the Johan Cruyff Foundation for a four-year period in May 2006. The partnership with the Johan Cruyff Foundation corresponds with Nuon’s wish to promote the wellbeing of society through sports sponsorship. One exemplary project is the National School Street Soccer Championships for children from the two highest classes of all primary schools in the Netherlands.
The Johan Cruyff Foundation supports sports projects for able and disabled children in the Netherlands and beyond. The partnership with Nuon is mainly focused on football activities for neighbourhood kids at ‘Cruyff Courts’ and other kickabout fields in the Netherlands. These play an important social role in areas and neighbourhoods, especially for children whose parents cannot afford the subscription fee for sports clubs.
In 2006 Nuon became the principal sponsor of Sustainable Tuesday. This is an initiative of the IVN, an association dedicated to promoting nature and environmental education in cooperation with social organisations. Sustainable Tuesday collects ideas from citizens and businesses for sustainable activities or business plans. Nuon sees these initiatives from society as contributions to a shared responsibility. On 5 September 2006 the Dutch prime minister, Mr Balkenende, met with the idea submitters and received a briefcase containing the collected ideas.
In 2005 Nuon started supporting the Reading & Writing Foundation for a period of three years. The foundation is dedicated to promoting literacy in the Netherlands. In 2006 the Reading & Writing Foundation held a workshop for HRM professionals of Nuon. The aim of the workshop was to learn to recognise low literacy levels within the organisation. At the customer service department, the foundation ‘plain-languaged’ a selection of letters. In 2007 all customer service letters will be rewritten in the same manner. In addition, Nuon is investigating whether self-service channels can be made more accessible for this target group.
