Energy Saving at Nuon

Energy Saving is obviously a theme in the management of our operations.

Staff awareness

Nuon’s Facility Management Department manages 7,500 staff workstations. In 2006 a campaign was conducted at all locations in order to make employees more aware of unnecessary energy and water consumption in our buildings. By means of a fun quiz employees were invited to test their knowledge of the use of elevators, dripping taps and computers. The campaign ended with a ‘Thick Jerseys Day’. Via the intranet and posters employees were encouraged to wear extra warm clothing so that the heating in the office could be turned a degree lower.

Technical measures

In 2006 a number of technical measures were taken to get a clearer picture of the energy consumption at our locations and to reduce this where possible. The settings of energy installations such as central heating boilers and air-conditioning were readjusted for optimal energy performance. In addition, Nuon started to monitor the energy consumption of buildings. Nuon has 24 locations in total. In a selection of these, smart energy meters will be placed which will be monitored online to keep track of their round-the-clock performance. The results can be compared mutually and with benchmark data. Major deviations from the norm are thus identified so that the cause can be remedied. The first buildings were equipped with a smart energy meter in 2006. This project is being carried out with the assistance of our business unit Ebatech.
