IPPC Directive

In 2006 Nuon made preparations for compliance with the IPPC Directive.

The European Directive for Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control obliges the member states of the EU to regulate large polluting enterprises by means of an integrated permit. The Directive harmonises the environmental requirements imposed on these enterprises. In the framework of IPPC, the best techniques available in Europe for large production processes have been described. Installations of enterprises falling within the scope of the Directive are required to have permits based on the best available techniques from 31 October 2007.

Almost all our energy generating plants fall within the IPPC Directive. In 2006 Nuon entered into consultations with the permit issuers to check for each combustion plant how the Directive will be complied with. The IPPC compliance assessment costs a lot of time and attention, not only because of the complexity of the applied and described technologies but also because the assessment must be carried out for each individual power station. The assessment may lead to new permit conditions requiring that the plant be adapted to the best available techniques. In cases where Nuon already applies the best available technique according to the IPPC directive, no new permit application will need to be submitted.
