Employee Participation
Nuon’s employee representatives were closely involved in the strategic future options of our company.
In 2006 the employee representatives devoted a lot of time and attention to Nuon’s future as a Dutch energy company:
- In the framework of the LME, the umbrella organisation for employee participation at energy companies, the possible consequences of the proposed unbundling of energy companies was once again highlighted to politicians and citizens;
- From May 2006 the Works Council was involved in determining Nuon’s national and international strategic options for the future;
- The employee representatives issued advice on the realignment of the business operations as a precondition for the company’s continuation as a commercially successful enterprise.
The Words Council is of the opinion that there is no future for Dutch energy companies in their current shape and size. In considering the options for economies of scale, the Works Council sees the following priorities:
- Retention of energy knowledge in the Netherlands;
- Retention of employment;
- Retention of the current level of employee benefits.
After consulting internal and external advisors, the employee representatives adopted the standpoint in May 2006 that a possible merger with Essent NV offers the best guarantees for the retention of knowledge, employment and employee benefits.
