District Heating

Municipal interest in the use of residual heat continued to grow in 2006. This year, a large concession was won for Rotterdam Zuid.

A lot of residual heat is released during industrial processes and the production of electricity. The heat that is not put to industrial use can sometimes be harnessed for district heating, thus avoiding the use of natural gas for heating homes and other buildings.

Our ambition is to connect all large-scale residual heat production to large-scale urban construction and renewal projects. District heating requires major investments that are only commercially viable if sufficient scale is achieved. Long-term partnerships with urbanised regions are essential in this connection.

Results for 2006

The number of small consumers with district heating rose from 82,200 to 86,087. The number of large users increased from 1,161 to 1,218. The increase was realised as a result of ongoing projects in Almere Noorderplas, Arnhem Schuytgraaf, Leiden Roomburg, Amsterdam IJburg and Amsterdam Zuidoost. Alongside current acquisitions in Amsterdam Noord, Amsterdam Zeeburgereiland and Arnhem Presikhaaf, a concession was obtained in 2006 from Rotterdam Zuid for the equivalent of about 17,000 homes. Nuon did not manage to conclude all the contracts for this project with suppliers and customers in 2006.
